Yamaha EMX: the electric motocross bike arrives by 2021

The project shared with Spike Technologies is in the pipeline, and the electric with performance similar to a 250cc is close

The future of electric motorcycles also and above all passes through the specialist ones: if in fact on the road the electric lends itself to criticism due to the weight, autonomy, and lack of an infrastructure network capable of clearing the general skepticism, in the taped or inside the cross-track the air that pulls is very different, and Yamaha seems to have understood this.

Although the timing has been extended, 2021 seems the correct year for the Yamaha EMX.

The project

Last summer, the Iwata brand partnered with the Dutch start-up Spike Technologies to create a prototype of a battery-powered motocross bike. The young Dutch company would supply a high-performance battery pack while the Japanese giant would adopt one of its most successful models, the YZF250, like the skeleton and base of the electric.

In short: via engine, tank, and gearbox to make room for an electric motor and a battery pack capable of performing worthy of a cross-track and the acceptable range to guarantee excellent fun.

The performance would also be close to that of a racing two-half, although, at the moment, no data has been released on the electric motor and batteries.

The competitors

We do not know if the EMX will have an enduro twin capable of challenging the KTM Freeride EX-C, but at the moment, the EMX is the only one among the motocross bikes on the market. Before her, especially in the USA, Alta Motors had moderate success, but it was closed after being absorbed by Harley-Davidson.

Of course, it should remember that Honda also presented the CR-Electric some time ago before the Japanese round of the Motocross World Championship. Perhaps the arrival of the Yamaha EMX will push the Casa dell'Ala to renew the Tre Diapasons challenge this time.
