Volkswagen Transporter Sportline, the van dresses up as a GTI

It is not only an aesthetic kit but also includes more trim and equipment. But for now, it is only for the UK market

On the European markets, the Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 is already famous as a multi-purpose van, and we have certainly seen more than a few ingenious camper conversions over the years. Still, this time the proposal comes straight from the manufacturer. And it is not a camper but something a little more lively than almost rivals the Abt's recommendations.

The T6.1 Sportline is more or less what the name suggests: the base formula would be limited to flashier rims and red finishes, but the trim goes further to make this T6.1 a true sports van inside, out, and under—starting with the frame that lowers the van by 30mm and a body kit that adds a custom front grille and sidebars. The roof spoiler and the 18 "glossy black wheels are almost obligatory.

Sumptuous setting

Inside, the Sportline adds Nappa leather seats with a honeycomb texture and suede trim. The model is packed with cutting-edge technologies, not least of the digital cockpit, which is a first for the van and the Combi. The front seats are heated, the audio system is up-to-date, and a Discover Media navigation system includes the equipment.

Driver assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

There is also the Black Edition.

Curiously, VW offers a further addition to the sporty character with the Sportline Black Edition, which adds a little more black while also including tinted windows, matte black sidebars, and "exclusive" color. Also included are the Black Edition decals, the updated navigation system. Still, as with the standard Sportline, it's not just an aesthetic pack: the Black Edition also adds suspension with Eibach springs for a more responsive set-up.

The engine has not been touched: the Sportline is based on the T6.1 with a 2-liter TDI engine in the top-of-the-range 204 hp version. The power is managed through a 7-speed DSG transmission, and according to the manufacturer, it allows you to reach 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.

The Sportline is currently only offered on the British market for van and Kombi with a short or long wheelbase. The price starts at 42,940 pounds (about 50,200 euros), for the Sportline Black Edition instead starts from 49,450 pounds (57,830 euros), but only the short wheelbase provided. Orders will open at the end of March, with deliveries expected to begin in July.
